EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State junior guard Lindsay Bowen (Dansville) has been named Big Ten Women's Basketball Player of the Week, the conference announced today. It marks the first time Bowen has won the league's Player of the Week award.
Bowen averaged 25.5 points as Michigan State won two road games last week. She sparked an upset of No. 3 Notre Dame Dec. 2 with a team-high 23 points, including a game-tying 3-point basket with just 13.6 seconds left that forced overtime. MSU went on to win the game in overtime, 82-73, snapping Notre Dame's 25-game home court winning streak. Bowen also tied a career high with four steals vs. the Irish and added five rebounds and two assists.
Bowen followed that performance with a 28-point outburst at Cincinnati Dec. 4, scoring 18 points during the second half to help MSU erase a late deficit during a 77-61 victory. Bowen hit 10-of-20 shots from the field, and her 3-pointer capped a 14-0 run that helped MSU overcome a 59-55 Cincinnati lead with less than seven minutes remaining. Bowen added three rebounds, three assists and a steal as the Spartans closed the game on a 22-2 run to improve to 6-1.
On the heels of a career-best 33-point performance Nov. 28 vs. TCU, Bowen is averaging 28 points per game over her last three games, and now leads the team with a 17.7 scoring average.
Bowen is the first Spartan to be named Big Ten Player of the Week since Syreeta Bromfield won the award Dec. 9, 2002.
Michigan State will host Eastern Illinois (3-2) Thursday, Dec. 9, at 7 p.m.
