Maggie Dwyer is a freshman forward from Grand Haven, Mich. Dwyer was named to AP Class A All-State first team as a senior in high school, and to the Class A All-State first team by the Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press Dream Team. She has played in all 10 games for MSU this season, starting four. She scored a career-high nine points in MSU's victory at No. 3 Notre Dame.
Q. Why did you choose MSU?
A. First of all it was close to home and I really wanted to stay close to my family so that they could come watch me play. The program is just great, the coaches are great, the players are great, so it was just obvious that this was the place that I needed to be.
Q. What is the hardest part of adjusting to college?
A. The biggest difference is just being away from home.
Q. Do your teammates help you adjust?
A. Yeah, they help me a lot. They are real supportive. They're great.
Q. What is your favorite part of college?
A. Just playing and being on a good team with such great players. It is a lot of fun and I have learned a lot just watching them already.
Q. How did you get started playing basketball?
A. I started around fifth grade playing at the Y. And then my dad just got me into it.
Q. Describe your first practice.
A. Well, we started out with conditioning and we played open gym, so that wasn't that intimidating. The real practice was kind of intimidating just having to learn all the new stuff, but I got used to it fairly quickly.
Q. Compare MSU basketball to high school basketball.
A. Everything here is team; the biggest thing is team where as in high school it is more individual. The level of play is a lot faster and more physical.
Q. What is your favorite ice cream?
A.Mint chocolate chip.
Q. What types of things have you learned off the court?
A. I had to learn how to manage my time. Between school and basketball we don't really have that much free time, so when we do we have to enjoy it.
Q. What has been your favorite part of being on the team so far?
A. Hawaii was fun. Beating Notre Dame in Notre Dame was probably the best.
Q. What do you look forward to?
A. It will be awesome to play UConn.
