EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State field hockey (15-2; 5-1 Big Ten) senior forward Veerle Goudswaard was named Big Ten Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday, Oct. 25. She also received Player of the Week recognition from womensfieldhockey.com.
Goudswaard, who leads the nation in goal-scoring with 26, helped her team capture a share of the Big Ten Championship crown over the weekend after MSU defeated Iowa, 2-1, and Indiana, 5-2, on Friday, Oct. 22 and Sunday, Oct. 24, respectively.
The Houten, Netherlands native, who currently leads the league in goals per game (1.53) and points per game (3.29), notched State's only two goals against Iowa, one of which was in overtime. Goudswaard also recorded a goal in Sunday's contest against Indiana.
The field hockey sensation has scored at least one goal in 13 of State's 17 contests this season. Of those 13 games, she has scored two or more goals per game, including three hat trick performances.
This marks Goudswaard's second conference POW accolade this month, as she received the honor on Oct. 4.
In addition to enjoying its second straight Big Ten Championship title, MSU prepares to head to Evanston, Ill., for the Big Ten Tournament, which takes place Nov. 5-7 at Northwestern.
