EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State (11-1; 3-0 Big Ten) field hockey remains undefeated in the Big Ten after defeating Ohio State (5-4; 0-3 Big Ten) 3-2, in overtime Saturday in Columbus. The Spartans traded goals with the Buckeyes until MSU managed to secure the win in the extra stanza.
Michigan State's Veerle Goudswaard put the Spartans on the scoreboard first 8:50 minutes into the first half. Goudswaard score the first point of the afternoon off a penalty corner and was assisted by juniors Breanna Harpstead and Jessica Miller. Ohio State responded when Leticia Fragapane answered with an unassisted goal at 14:10.
Hungry for a lead, Spartan junior forward Annebet Beerman, with Goudswaard on the assist, drove Michigan State ahead, 2-1, when she deflected a shot off of a teammate into the goal.
The Buckeyes proved to be a relentless opponent as Florencia Stier fired a shot into the backboard in the middle of the circle to tie the game once again. As time of the clock dwindled, it became apparent that the contest would move into overtime.
Both teams got off to a quick start as they traded possession of the ball. At the 78:08 mark Goudswaard managed to steal the ball in the middle of the pitch for a breakaway score, securing the Spartans win. Up next for the Spartans are the Central Michigan Chippewas in East Lansing on Tuesday, Oct. 5 at 4 p.m.
