EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State's women's golf team is ranked No. 1 in this week's Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index. The Spartans have the No. 1 slot with a 72.51 rating, followed by Auburn (72.54), Duke (72.54), Notre Dame (73.14) and Arizona (73.21). It marks MSU's highest-ever ranking.
"It's a great feeling to be ranked No. 1," said seventh-year head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll. "This team is aware, though, that when it matters it's in May. It's a good way to start the season, but we still have a long way to got to reach our ultimate goal - advancing to the National Championship."
The Spartans opened the fall season with back-to-back victories at the Badger Invitational (Sept. 12-14) and the Mary Fossum Invitational (Sept. 20-21). MSU heads to the Lady Northern Intercollegiate in Columbus, Ohio, this weekend (Sept. 27-28).
In addition to the team's No. 1 ranking, a pair of Spartan golfers are ranked individual in the top 10 in seniors Allison Fouch (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Sarah Martin (Grosse Ile, Mich.).
Fouch, who is ranked third in the country, has picked up medalist honors at both the Badger Intercollegiate and the Mary Fossum. Fouch paces the team with a 73.20 stroke average.
Martin, who is ranked seventh in the country, has posted two top-five finishes with a third-place showing at the Badger Invitational and tied for fifth at the Fossum Invitational. She holds the second-lowest stroke average on the squad at 74.80.
