EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's soccer team out-shot and out-chanced Loyola Marymount, Monday (Sept. 1) at the MSU/Radisson Fall Classic, but came up short in a 3-1 loss. Each team is now 1-1 on the year.
Loyola Marymount had the game's first quality scoring opportunity early on, but MSU goalkeeper Mike Robinson (Sr., Troy) was able to get a piece of Yuji Teranishi's shot and deflect it off the post to keep the Lions off the board. The Lions later took the lead in the first half on a goal by Kevin Novak.
The Spartans' John Minagawa-Webster (Jr., Monroe) had two of MSU's best scoring chances early in the second half, but was unable to knot the game for the Spartans. The Lions answered when Kevin Novak scored his second tally of the game at the 71:51 mark to make it 2-0.
State finally got on the board in the last two minutes as Kellen Kalso (Jr., Oxford) converted a penalty kick with 1:17 remaining. With Robinson out of the goal to aid the Spartan offensive attack, LMU added another goal in the last 10 seconds to make the final score 3-1.
"I thought we played better today than in yesterday's win. We were more intense and more dangerous," said MSU head coach Joe Baum. "I thought our effort was great today, but we just couldn't finish the chances."
MSU will travel to IPFW, September 7 at 4 p.m.
