EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team heads to Bloomington to take on the Hoosiers of Indiana on Saturday (April 5). The match is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the Varsity Tennis Courts on Indiana's campus. If weather conditions do not allow outside play, the match will be held indoor at the Indiana Tennis Center.
The Spartans are 8-9 overall and 0-5 in the Big Ten this season, while the Hoosiers 8-10 and 0-4 in the Big Ten. Both teams are searching for their first conference win of the season and both are coming off three straight losses. Indiana has been ranked as high as No. 46 this season, with their most recent ranking at No. 73 (March 12). The Spartans last ranking was No. 70 (Jan. 29). IU is scheduled to take on No. 27 Notre Dame today (April 3) in Bloomington.
Michigan State and Indiana have faced six common opponents this season. MSU holds a 4-2 record against the group, while IU is 3-3. The group consists of Ball State, Penn State, Ohio State, Miami of Ohio, DePaul and Bowling Green. Both teams lost to Ohio State and Penn State, but the Spartans defeated DePaul, 6-1, while the Hoosiers fell, 5-2.
Last season, the Spartans, who were then ranked No. 63 in the nation, lost a tight match in East Lansing against the No. 41 Hoosiers, 4-3. The win pushed IU to a perfect 36-0 all-time against Michigan State.
Fourth-year head coach Tim Bauer guides the Spartans. Bauer holds a career record of 38-62 and just recently coached his 100th career match for the Green and White. Lin Loring, who is in his 26th season as head coach and is the all-time leader for career victories in NCAA women's tennis, coaches the Hoosiers. Loring holds a 578-177 (.766) career mark with Indiana and 620-194 (.762) record overall.
The Spartans will return to East Lansing for two Big Ten matches against Purdue (April 12) and No. 24 Illinois (April 13) before concluding the rest of their regular season schedule at No. 17 Northwestern (April 19) and at Wisconsin (April 20).
