WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Michigan State's run for a first-round bye in the Big Ten Tournament came to a halt Sunday (April 13) when the men's tennis team suffered a 5-2 defeat to Purdue. The No. 59 Spartans fell to 12-11 on the season and 3-5 in the conference, while the No. 50 Boilermakers improved to 12-6 and 6-2 in the Big Ten.
Doubles action saw similar results compared to MSU's match against No. 1 Illinois, April 12 as Purdue grabbed two of three matches for the first point. Junior Chris Mitchell (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and sophomore Andrew Formanczyk (Rochester Hills, Mich.) controlled their match at No. 3 against Seth McKinley and Sounak Chatterjee, 8-2, for State's lone win. The duo moved its undefeated streak to four en route to a 6-2 record in the Big Ten.
Michigan State's hopes of a comeback were dashed quickly as the Boilermakers took the first three points in singles to secure the match. Senior Jimmy McGuire (Columbus, Ohio) kept his Big Ten record above .500, though, with a 6-2, 7-6 triumph at No. 5 vs. McKinley. State's first point of the afternoon moved McGuire's Big Ten record to 5-3, while his 18 wins for the season marked a career-high.
Junior Eric Simonton (Annandale, N.J.) extended his winning-streak to a career-long eight with a 6-2, 5-7, 1-0(14-12) victory over David Robinson at No. 6. Simonton's record enhanced to a team-best 23-13 and 7-1 in the conference. But Purdue proved to be too much by taking the top four matches in singles for the 5-2 win.
With the loss, State remained in a tie for fifth place in the Big Ten with Indiana and Northwestern. MSU will return to action Friday (April 18) when the Wildcats venture into East Lansing for a 2 p.m. showdown.
