NORMAN, Okla. - The No. 71 Michigan State men's tennis team dropped its third straight match as Oklahoma captured five singles points for a 5-2 victory on Saturday (March 8). It was the second time in the last three matches MSU lost after winning the doubles point.
Michigan State (9-5 overall, 0-0 Big Ten) jumped on top early by squeaking out two doubles matches for a 1-0 lead. Junior Eric Simonton (Annandale, N.J.) and sophomore Cameron Marshall (Louisville, Ky.) won their second straight match with a 9-7 win at No. 1 over Tommy Garrison and Chris Mitchell. Seniors Adam Hourani (Lansing, Mich.) and Jimmy McGuire (Columbus, Ohio) defeated Matt Ogle and Brad Prigmore at No. 2, 8-5, for their fifth win in six matches.
The Spartans could not hold onto the lead as Oklahoma (10-2 overall, 0-1 Big 12) dominated singles play. McGuire, however, continued to shine by improving his record to 13-9 with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Garrison at No. 4. Hourani and sophomore Andrew Formanczyk (Rochester Hills, Mich.) won their respective first sets, but ultimately fell in three.
Michigan State will look forward to opening its Big Ten season with a March 14 match-up at 2 p.m., with Ohio State at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
