EAST LANSING, Mich. - Sophomore guard Kristin Haynie (Mason) had 13 points, seven rebounds, six assists and three steals, but it wasn't enough as Michigan State lost a 75-65 decision to Illinois Monday in the Breslin Center. With the win, Illinois (16-9, 8-6) moved into a fifth-place tie with Michigan State (15-10, 8-6) in the Big Ten standings.
Four other Spartans also reached double figures, but none of them had more than 11 points. Sophomore Kelli Roehrig (Papillion, Neb.) scored 11 points and added six rebounds, while senior Syreeta Bromfield (Kingston, Jamaica) and freshmen Lindsay Bowen (Dansville) and Liz Shimek (Empire) scored 10 points each.
Freshman Janelle Hughes had a career-high 17 points, as did junior Aminata Yanni, to lead Illinois. The Illini became just the fourth team this season to outrebound Michigan State, owning a 35-28 edge on the boards, and shot 51 percent (26-of-51), including 57.1 percent in the second half (12-of-21).
"I want to compliment Illinois," said MSU head coach Joanne P. McCallie. "They played a very, very strong game. They were well-coached and executed their game plan."
Michigan State overcame a 10-point second half deficit with an 11-1 run that evened the score at 51 after a Shimek layup with 6:50 remaining, but Illinois answered with a 10-2 run and never relinquished the lead. A jumper by junior Julie Pagel (Utica) cut the deficit to 61-57, but MSU would get no closer.
Michigan State shot 43.1 percent from the field (25-of-58), and just 18.2 percent from three-point range (2-of-11). Illinois made eight of its 16 three-point field goal attempts. The Spartans did own an advantage in turnovers, forcing 19 while committing just 14.
"It was poor of us to be outrebounded," added McCallie. "Our defensive effort was not nearly at times what it needed to be."
The first half featured seven ties and six lead changes, as neither team led by five. MSU used a 10-2 run to turn an 18-15 deficit into a 25-20 lead after a Haynie basket with 8:26 left in the first half. MSU took its last lead of the game at 34-33 on a fastbreak basket by senior Jennifer Callier (Indianapolis, Ind.) with 2:24 left, but Illinois scored the last four points of the half to take a 37-34 lead into the lockerroom.
A basket by Illinois' Cindy Dallas, who had 12 points and eight rebounds, pushed Illinois' lead to 50-40 with 12:24 left before MSU made its run.
Michigan State will visit Iowa Thursday night at 7 p.m. central time.
Spartan Notebook:
