STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - For the second straight year, Michigan State's field hockey team faced Indiana in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament. Fortunately for the No. 2-seeded Spartans, the result was the same as they eased into the 2003 semifinals with a 3-1 victory over the seventh-seeded Hoosiers Friday at Penn State. MSU picked up goals from three different players in the win.
Michigan State's offense was flowing throughout the whole game as it outshot Indiana 18-2. Two of the Spartans' 18 shots hit the back of the net in the first half. Sophomore Michelle Huynh-Ba recorded her second goal of the season as she got a shot past IU goalkeeper Molly Pulkrabek 8:53 into the game. Junior Veerle Goudswaard, meanwhile, tied Annebet Beerman for the team-lead in goals, scoring just over 11 minutes later to help State take a 2-0 advantage into the second half. The eventual game-winner was Goudswaard's 15th on the season.
The Hoosiers cut the lead in half at the 48:52 mark, but MSU's penalty corners did in the Indiana defense. Notching eight corners to IU's three, freshman Jennifer Beeuwkes converted on a late attempt, scoring off a pass from sophomore Breanna Harpstead at 66:43 for an important insurance goal.
The victory was the sixth straight over Indiana as State has outscored the Hoosiers 29-4 over that span. The streak also includes a 3-0 triumph over IU in the Big Ten Tournament last season.
State will take on either No. 3 Ohio State or No. 6 Northwestern in a semifinal match Saturday at 2 p.m.
