EAST LANSING, Mich. - In its first action of the 2003-04 season, the Michigan State men's tennis team concluded two separate tournaments Sunday (Oct. 5). One Spartan duo was knocked out in doubles competition at the Icy Hot ITA All-American Pre-qualifying tournament in Chattanooga, Tenn., at the same time MSU swept eight singles matches from Maryland at the Tom Fallon Invitational in South Bend, Ind.
Senior Chris Mitchell (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and junior Andrew Formanczyk (Rochester Hills, Mich.) reached the round of 32 after receiving a bye and a second round victory at the All-American Championships and were looking for more. But Louisiana-Lafayette's Evgheni Corduneau and Amanjot Singh stood in the Spartans' way and escaped with an 8-6 win, ending State's bid for a spot in the Sweet Sixteen.
Michigan State had better fortune at Notre Dame, winning 10 of 11 total matches. Picking up his first victory as a Spartan, junior Steve Srivastava (East Lansing, Mich.) defeated Notre Dame's Ben Hatten, 6-1, 6-4. Srivastava then topped Maryland's Rory Theis, 6-2, 6-1, for his second triumph.
Also earning their first singles wins this season, junior Anthony Stefani (Grosse Pointe Shores, Mich.) defeated Notre Dame's Nick Chimerakis, 6-4, 6-2, while sophomore Mike Brown (Portage, Mich.) needed two sets as well for his win against Maryland's John O'Rourke, 6-2, 6-4.
To complete the singles sweep against Maryland, junior Cameron Marshall (Louisville, Ky.), senior Eric Simonton (Annandale, N.J.) and freshmen Joseph McWilliams (Aurora, Ill.) and Michael Flowers (Memphis, Tenn.) all added wins for State. McWilliams finished his first collegiate event with a record of 4-0 in singles.
The Spartans ended the tournament by winning two of three doubles matches vs. Maryland. Marshall and Simonton combined for the first victory while Flowers and McWilliams nailed down the second.
Michigan State's next tournament begins Friday (Oct. 10) when the Spartans travel to Ann Arbor for the Michigan Invitational. The event runs until Sunday (Oct. 12).
