Women's Tennis Completes Day Two At Wolverine Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team completed its second day of competition Saturday at the Wolverine Invitational hosted by the University of Michigan. Four members of the Spartan squad are taking part in the event.
Only one round of singles play took place on Saturday, with two of the four Spartans emerging victorious in their matches. Freshman Sarah Andrews (Darwin, Australia) reached the consolation finals in the "Maize" singles flight thanks to a 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) win against Malena Remynse of Western Michigan. Andrews will face Ashley Jakupcin of Bowling Green in tomorrow's consolation final.
In the "Wolverine" singles flight, junior Karen Gustafson (East Lansing, Mich.) won her only match of the day in a consolation bracket, routing Bowling Green's Laura Kokinda, 6-2, 6-0.
In "Blue" singles flight consolation matches, senior Caroline Lay fell in three sets to DePaul's Petra Rehusova, 4-6, 7-5, (10-8), while sophomore Shelley Brady (Grand Blanc, Mich.) lost to Genevieve Charron of Marquette, 5-7, 6-2, (10-4).
In doubles matches, MSU had two teams playing in today's quarterfinals. Lay and Andrews reached the semifinals with an 8-1 victory over Gaby Coello and Ashley Jakupcin of Bowling Green, before bowing out against Michigan's Kara Delicata and Kavitha Tipirneni, 8-6. Lay and Andrews will play in a third-place match tomorrow.
MSU's other doubles team, Brady and Gustafson, lost in the quarterfinals to Gergana Ganeva and Natalie Matko of DePaul, 8-2, but bounced back with an 8-1 win against Lyndsey Moloney and Hannah Hinton of Cincinnati.
Action at the Wolverine Invitational will conclude on Sunday.
