Women's Tennis Opens Play At ITA Regionals

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team opened play at the ITA Midwest Championships Thursday in Kalamazoo, Mich., with two Spartans competing in qualifying singles play.
Sophomore Shelley Brady (Grand Blanc, Mich.), who opened as a No. 9-16 seed in the qualifying tournament, won her opening round match vs. Maria Blanco of Southern Illinois, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, but then fell in another three-set match in the next round to Jennifer Hodgman of Iowa, 7-6(3), 0-6, 6-3.
MSU's other competitor was freshman Sarah Andrews (Darwin, Australia). Andrews was beaten in the opening round by Pavlina Akritas of Illinois, 6-0, 6-0, then fell in the consolation round to Stacy Kokx of Northwestern, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0(8).
On Friday, Andrews will team with senior Caroline Lay (Brisbane, Australia) in the main draw doubles opening round. MSU will also have the duo of Brady and junior Karen Gustafson (East Lansing, Mich.) competing Friday in the doubles bracket. Lay will also participate in the singles main draw which begins Satuday.
