Doubles Teams Still Alive In Ball State Invitational

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Michigan State men's tennis season opened on a high note Friday and Saturday as the Spartans stayed alive in three of the six flights of the Ball State Invitational, two in the doubles main draw and one in the singles consolation round.
Seniors Adam Hourani (Lansing, Mich.) and Jimmy McGuire (Columbus, Ohio) continued their success together from last season by advancing to the A flight semifinal round. In the first round, the duo defeated Toledo's Dipesh Rao and Todd Wojtkowski, 8-5, and escaped the quarterfinals with an 8-6 win over Ball State's Matt Baccarani and Kevin Burnett.
In his first doubles competition as a Spartan, freshman Mike Brown (Portage, Mich.) teamed up with sophomore Anthony Stefani (Grosse Pointe Shores, Mich.) to reach the semifinals of the C division. After cruising past Butler's Andy Bartish and Adam Bordow, 8-2, in the first round, Brown and Stefani defeated in-state rivals Justin Kates and Erik Lindroos from Western Michigan, 8-5.
Hourani will also focus his energy on singles where the co-captain advanced to the consolation finals of the B division. After dropping his first round main draw match and falling behind one set in the back-draw first round, Hourani eventually eased his way into the finals, defeating Valparaiso's Chris Widmeyer, Northern Illinois's Steven Gulley and Wojtkowski, respectively.
Juniors Chris Mitchell (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and Eric Simonton (Annandale, N.J.) both proceeded in singles to the quarterfinals Friday, but fell Saturday morning. Mitchell breezed past Valparaiso's Ben Durham-Freer, 6-3, 6-1, and Rao, 6-4, 6-1, in the A bracket while falling to Ball State's Chris Varga, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Simonton also did not have trouble in his first two matches in the B division, beating Toledo's Mirsad Begic, 6-4, 6-3, and St. Louis's Taylor Curran, 6-2, 6-0. He ultimately fell to Western Michigan's Justin Kates, 6-3, 6-1.
Sophomore Andrew Formanczyk (Rochester Hills, Mich.) could not make the trip due to a pulled stomach muscle, but should be ready for practice next week.
Singles finals and doubles semifinals will conclude the tournament, Sunday, September 29.
