EAST LANSING, Mich. - No. 9 Indiana scored three goals in both the first and second halves en route to defeating the No. 22 Michigan State men's soccer team, 6-1, Sunday (Sept. 22) afternoon at Old College Field. With the loss, State dropped to 5-2 (0-1 Big Ten) while Indiana improved to 5-1-2 (1-0 Big Ten).
"Indiana is fine team," said MSU head coach Joe Baum. "We got what we deserved. We gave them too many chances and they are such a good team that they capitalized on all our mistakes."
Indiana scored its first goal just :46 into the match as Vijay Dias snapped MSU goalkeeper Tyler Robinson's (Sr., Lansing) shutout streak that had lasted three games. The Spartans responed by creating scoring chances, the best of which came in the 22nd minute when a diving header by Jeff Krass (Jr., Brighton) just missed the net. IU came back, however, and added their second goal under three minutes later to make it 2-0, before adding another tally just before half.
Trailing 5-0 in the second half, Thomas Trivelloni (Jr., Mt. Clemens) took a pass from Steve Doster (Fr., Frankfort, Ill.) and nailed it past IU goalkeeper Jay Nolly. It was the first goal the Spartans scored against an Indiana team since September 29, 1996.
"They are a very good defensive team," said Trivelloni. "We didn't show up today as a team. We we were not ready pregame, or during the game and it showed."
Robinson finished with nine saves for MSU.
State returns to action Sept. 29 when it hosts Northwestern at 1:00 p.m.
