MSU Men's Tennis Thumps Southeastern Louisiana, 6-1

HAMMOND, La. - The No. 59 Michigan State men's tennis team improved to 8-4 this spring with a 6-1 victory against Southeastern Louisiana Monday in the first of three MSU matches played this week in Louisiana.
MSU started impressively at doubles, but winning all three matches from the Lions (4-7). Junior Jimmy McGuire (Columbus, Ohio) and sophomore Eric Simonton (Annandale, N.J.) were triumphant at number-one doubles, 8-5, while junior Goran Topalo (Prague, Czech Rep.) and sophomore Mike Jonckheere (London, Ont.) won by the same score at No. 3. Juniors Chris Mitchell (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and Adam Hourani (Lansing, Mich.) had an even easier time at No. 2, earning an 8-2 decision.
The Spartans continued their momentum into the singles matches, winning five of six contests, with four of the victories coming in straight sets. Mitchell had a battle at No. 1, but earned a 7-5, 2-6, 6-2 victory against Eric Subirats. Formanczyk won a first-set tiebreaker, then went on to a 7-6(2), 6-3 victory at No. 2, while Topalo rolled to a 7-5, 6-2 victory at No. 3.
Simonton had a bit of a struggle but claimed a 7-6, 7-5 victory at No. 5, while freshman Cameron Marshall (Louisville, Ky.) earned the sixth point with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles. The only Spartan to fall was McGuire, who lost a hard-fought 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 decision at No. 4 to Paul Birket.
The Spartans will return to action Tuesday, March 5, when they visit No. 75 Louisiana-Lafayette.
