2002 WNIT Postgame Quotes
Michigan State 87, DePaul 76
DePaul head coach Doug Bruno:
"Our goal every year is to make the NCAA Tournament but we're thankful that the WNIT people allowed us to compete in this very excellent tournament with excellent teams.
"Joanne (McCallie, Michigan State head coach) has done an excellent job here. I like her team's chemistry. They play well together. We probably could have had a few more answers simply on the defensive side of the ball. I was irritated that defensively we couldn't keep people from breaking us down off the dribble. I thought they did their job on wanting to take us, and us not being able to defend them off the dribble.
DePaul forward Lenae Williams:
"I think they did a great job in the second half of paying attention to me. They did the same thing in the first half but obviously I was able to get shots and make them. I think in the second half they put more of an emphasis on that and they did a great job."
Michigan State head coach Joanne P. McCallie:
"What a fantastic game. It was everything you could ask for in a tournament game. That was just like an NCAA Tournament game. It was great - in terms of shooting, aggressiveness, attacking, rebounding and everything else.
"We're very proud of our team. It was just a tremendous team effort all the way. DePaul is a very, very good team and there's no doubt they are very much an NCAA Tournament team. We were all very proud of the second half defense. We took a lot of hits in the first half with some great three-point shooting. I love to see the balance in our scoring. Everyone was really stepping into their role and playing their role throughout and that's so important."
Michigan State guard Vnemina Reese:
"Whenever I had an advantage I just took it. It was basically attacking. I was in more of an attack mode, and I haven't done that a whole lot. It was either do it now or go home and never do it again so I went for it.
Michgian State forward Julie Pagel:
"It was really great to see different people step up. It was probably the first time we had that many people in double figures. It was a nice balanced attack on offense. You obviously can't complain about an offense when you score 87 points so next game we really have to look forward to our defense and get back to what's helped us the most."
