BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Michigan State women's basketball team ran into a second half hot-shooting Indiana squad and dropped a 67-55 decision on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 3) at Assembly Hall. MSU falls to 14-9 overall, 4-8 in the Big Ten, while Indiana improves to 11-1 overall, 5-6 in the conference.
Indiana took a three-point lead (29-26) into the locker room at the half, but outscored the Spartans 38-to-29 down the stretch. IU shot 62.5 percent (10-of-16) in the second half and 56.8 percent (21-of-37) for the game. On the other hand, MSU shot just 39.1 percent (9-of-23) in the second half and 40.8 percent (20-of-49) for the game.
"I don't think our team rose to the occasion," said MSU head coach Joanne P. McCallie. "It was very disappointing. This is another in a long list of lessons that we have learned. We didn't come out with the kind of intensity we needed in the second half. We need to be a lot tougher."
Kristin Haynie led MSU with a game-high 19 points. Syreeta Bromfield finished with 17 points and Julie Pagel added 12.
Three Hoosiers scored in double figures led by Erin McGinnis with 14 points. Heather Cassady chipped in 13 points, while Jill Chapman added 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Michigan State returns to action next Saturday (Feb. 9) when the Spartans host Illinois. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at the Breslin Center. Saturday's game is "Take a Kid to the Game" day where for each adult ticket purchased, a child gets in free.
