MADISON, Wis. - The No. 17 Michigan State wrestling team (3-6, 0-3 Big Ten) fell in defeat Friday (Feb. 2) to No. 18 Wisconsin (10-6, 2-1 Big Ten), 21-19.
Michigan State dominated the match early as the Spartans scored three straight major decisions and opened up a 12-0 lead.The match began at 157 pounds, with No. 8 Gray Maynard (Jr., Las Vegas) defeating Wisconsin's Adam Turner 14-1. Anton Hall (Jr., Ada), at 165 pounds, and Rashad Evans (Jr., Niagara Falls, N.Y.) at 174 pounds continued where Maynard left off as they each earned major decisions.
Nathaniel Mesyn (Jr., Clinton Twp.) at 184 pounds, was pinned at 1:54 by No. 14 Ralph DeNisco of Wisconsin. In the 197-pond match, John Wechter (Jr., Saginaw) fell to Wisconsin's Jereck Horton. This narrowed the margin as Michigan State led, 12-10.
Wisconsin captured its first lead of the night (13-12) when Wisconsin heavyweght Justin Staebler downed Michigan State's Michael Keenan (So., Columbus, Ohio) 8-3.
The Spartans countered as No. 19 Chris Williams (Sr., Perry), at 125 pounds, scored a 6-1 decision over No. 9 Tony Black of Wisconsin. This gave Michigan State a 15-13 lead.
No. 4 Kevin Black of Wisconsin scored a technical fall over Michigan State's Scott Pushman (Fr., Fenton) at 133 pounds. Wisconsin recaptured a lead 18-15. At 141 pounds, Charlie Sageman (Jr., Saginaw), lost an 8-5 decision to No 19 Grant Hoer.
In the final match of the evening, No. 11 Karl Nadolsky (Jr., Holland) scored a major decision over Wisconsin's Tyler Laudon at 149 pounds.
MSU returns to action Sunday, Feb. 3 as it takes on Indiana at 1:00 p.m.EST in Bloomington, Ind.
