No. 17 Spartan Wrestling Defeats Indiana, 21-16

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -The No. 17 Michigan State wrestling team (4-6, 1-3 Big Ten) defeated Indiana (8-8, 0-4 BT), 21-16, Sunday afternoon (Feb. 3).
Michigan State got off to a fast start as Anton Hall (Jr., Ada) recorded a 13-3 major decison over Indiana's Alex LaPointe at 165 pounds. In the next match at 174 pounds, Rashad Evans (Jr., Niagara Falls, N.Y.) scored a convincing 8-1 decision over Indiana's Andrew Wolf, giving the Spartans a 7-0 advantage.
At 184 pounds, Indiana closed the gap as No. 2 Viktor Sveda pinned Nathaniel Mesyn (Jr., Clinton Twp.) at 6:31. In the 197-pound match, No. 17 John Wecher (Jr., Saginaw) lost a tough overtime decision 4-2 to Indiana's Pat DeGain, which put the Hoosiers ahead 9-7.
Michigan State quickly regained its lead after heavyweight Michael Keenan (So., Columbus, Ohio) dominated his match against Indiana's Branden Sisson. Keenan walked away with a 16-5 major decison. At 125 pounds, No. 19 Chris Williams (Sr., Perry) won a 3-2 overtime decision over No. 14 Greg Schaeffer of Indiana. The score was tied at two after three periods, but Williams scored the victory with 1:01 in riding time advantage.
At 133 pounds, Scott Pushman (Fr., Fenton) lost a major decison to Indiana's Brian Smiley 14-6. The Hoosiers scored a second straight victory as No. 8 Coyte Cooper defeated Eric Keith (Fr., Portage, Ind.) 8-3, at 141 pounds.
No. 11 Karl Nadolsky (Jr., Holland) earned a 15-6 major decision at 149 pounds. The Spartans claimed the final match of the afternoon at 157 pounds as No.8 Gray Maynard (Jr., Las Vegas) defeated Indiana's Rocky Mantella.
