EAST LANSING - Some athletes use cryptic words or hand signals to communicate on the field and gain an edge on opponents.
Michigan State field hockey players Annebet Beerman, Judith Van Haeringen and Sophie Rosmalen have their own system of code - the Dutch language.
All three hail from the Netherlands. All three have been instrumental in the success of the No. 5 Spartans, who play Indiana at 10 a.m. today in Columbus, Ohio in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament.
Beerman, a sophomore midfielder, has emerged this season as the Spartans' top offensive threat. She leads the teams in goals (15) and points (36). Her on-field chemistry with Van Haeringen and Rosmalen often gives MSU an advantage.
