COLUMBUS, Ohio - Five members of the Michigan State field hockey team were named to the All-Big Ten team on Nov. 7, at the banquet prior to the Big Ten Tournament in Columbus, Ohio. The five selections, voted on by league coaches, are the most in program history for the Spartans and tied Penn State for the most All-Big Ten honors awarded to one team this season.
Junior Sophie Rosmalen (Oss, Netherlands) and sophomore Annebet Beerman (Maarssen, Netherlands) were selected to the All-Big Ten first-team, while senior Cynthia Martin (Vancouver, British Columbia) and sophomores Judith van Haeringen (Hague, Netherlands) and Christina Kirkaldy (Afton, N.Y.) were named to the second team.
Rosmalen was a unanimous selection for the conference's first-team, one of seven players to earn that distinction. This is the second consecutive season that the junior has been named to the All-Big Ten first-team. A great ball handler, Rosmalen has scored four goals and added five assists this season. Rosmalen, who dominates the midfield for the MSU squad, tallied goals against St. Joseph's, Central Michigan and a pair of markers against Massachusetts.
Beerman earned her first collegiate All-Big Ten honor after blasting in 15 goals and six assists during her sophomore campaign. Beerman leads the team and is currently ranked third in the conference in both points (36) and goals (15). The first Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week this season, Beerman has tallied seven game-winning goals and has had multiple goal games three times this season.
van Haeringen was selected to the second-team for the second straight year. This year, van Haeringen set a program-record for assists in a season (14) and currently leads the conference in the same category. Ranked second on the Spartans' roster in points, she is fourth in the league with 32. Only a sophomore, she is ranked sixth on the Spartans' all-time assist list, accounting for 22 helpers in two seasons.
Martin has registered nine goals this season, just two shy of the her previous career total. She has also added three assists for 21 points. Martin registered at least one goal in three of the Spartans's six Big Ten games this season. Martin recorded her first hat trick of her career this season, tallying three scores in the opening half of play against Rutgers. The nine scores tallied this year by Martin are tied for third on the team's season goals scored list.
Kirkaldy, the Big Ten's second-team goalkeeper, is not only statistically ranked as the top goalie in the league, but the nation as well, posting a goals-against-average of 0.677, allowing just 12 goals in nearly 1250 minutes of action. In her first year between the pipes for the Green and White, Kirkaldy has posted five individual shutouts and been on the field for eight. This season, Kirkaldy has been named the conference's Defensive Player of the Week twice and was the National Rookie of the Week.
The Spartans take to the field on Friday, Nov. 8, to open the Big Ten Tournament at 10 a.m. Second-seeded Michigan State will face off with No. 7-seed Indiana at the North Turf Field on the campus of Ohio State University.
