CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Five members of the Michigan State field hockey team were named to the 2002 STX/NFHCA Division I All-West Region Team. Sophomores Annebet Beerman (Maarssen, Netherlands), Christina Kirkaldy (Afton, N.Y.) and junior Sophie Rosmalen (Oss, Netherlands) were all seleceted as first-team honorees, while senior Cynthia Martin (Vancouver, British Columbia) and sophomore Judith van Haeringen (The Hauge, Netherlands) were named to the second-team.
The Spartans are tied for the most players from a single school to be selected to the All-West Region. This is the second time that three of the honorees have been named to the regional squad. Rosmalen is making her second consecutive appearance on the first-team, while van Haeringen was named to the second-team for the second year. Beerman, an second-team member last season, earns her first All-West Region first-team honor.
Beerman leads the team in goals and points, scoring 22 goals and eight assists for 50 points. An All-Big Ten first-team member, the sophomore midfielder is among the nation's elite, ranked seventh in both scoring categories. She has tallied multi-goal games in five outings this season and was named co-MVP of the 2002 Big Ten Tournament after scoring five of the nine Spartan goals.
Netminder Kirkaldy leads the nation in goals-allowed-average (0.67) and saves percentage (0.861). Posting six shutouts in her first season, the sophomore was named to the All-Big Ten second-team and shared tournament MVP honors with Beerman. A two-time Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, Kirkaldy has also been honored as the National Rookie of the Week on three occasions.
Rosmalen's excellent ball-handling skills allow her to take full advantage of the field from her forward/midfield position. A unanimous decision as All-Big Ten first team, Rosmalen has scored four goals and added five assists this season. Rosmalen, who dominates the midfield for the MSU squad, tallied goals against St. Joseph's, Central Michigan and a pair of markers against Massachusetts.
Martin has registered nine goals this season and has also added three assists for 21 points. Martin registered at least one goal in three of the Spartans's six Big Ten games this season. Martin recorded her first hat trick of her career this season, tallying three scores in the opening half of play against Rutgers. Martin has also been a defensive threat this season, registering three defensive saves, including a game-saving stop in the NCAA second-round contest with Northeastern.
A native of The Hague, Netherlands, van Haeringen has registed 10 goals this season and added 15 assists. She produced the third highest assist-total in school history and in just two seasons, has moved into fifth-place on the program's all-time assist list with 23. The sophomore back has accounted for three game-winning goals, accumulating 33 points, which is second on the team and her 10 goals ranks third.
The Spartans return to action on Friday, Nov. 22, when they participate in the first Final Four in program history. Michigan State will take on No. 2 seed Wake Forest at 7:30 p.m., at Trager Stadium in Louisville, Ky.
