ITA MIDWEST REGIONAL IN REVIEW: Michigan State completed its trip to Wisconsin going 9-6 in singles and 2-3 in doubles. Qualifying round action saw Jimmy McGuire and Cameron Marshall win three matches in two days to advance to the main draw. Both player won their decisive match in three sets to reach the weekend. Saturday's action was highlighted by Andrew Formanczyk and his upset win over No. 88 Chris Martin of Illinois in the second round. For the second consecutive year, he would advance to the Sweet Sixteen. Formanczyk and Chris Mitchell would team up later in the afternoon to defeat Justin Gaard and Stuart Waters of Iowa while Marshall and Eric Simonton eliminated Matt Kinst and Radu John Vladea of Western Illinois. However, Formanczyk and both doubles teams would fall Sunday.
BIG TEN INDOORS: The Spartans enjoyed almost three weeks off after the Region IV tournament in preparation for the Big Ten Singles Indoor Championships in Minneapolis, Minn. Last season, Andrew Formanczyk dominated his opponents. After falling in the second round of the main draw in a three set match to Purdue's Troy Havens, Formanczyk won five straight matches to claim the consolation title, dropping only one set along the way.
I'D RATHER PLAY TWO INSTEAD: Out of 71 total singles matches played this fall, 26 have required a tie-breaking third set. While 12 were played at the Minnesota Invitational, which had a format of a 10-point tie-breaker instead of full third set, the other 14 went the distance. The Spartans are 8-6 when they play a full three-set match.
THIS JUST IN: Xavier has been added to the schedule as part of a doubleheader February 8. The dual match will begin approximately 2 p.m. as the Spartans host DePaul at 10 a.m the same day.
