CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - While first and second round singles matches for the ITA All-American pre-qualifying tournament were scheduled to be completed Friday, Oct. 4, remnants of Hurricane Lili suspended play for most of the afternoon, causing opening round matches to be completed deep into the night. But sophomore Andrew Formanczyk (Rochester Hills, Mich.) managed to advance to the second round despite of the weather.
Opening the round of 256 against North Carolina'a Brad Pomeroy with a 6-1 first-set win, the rains halted Formanczyk's momentum. After waiting for the courts to clear, he needed a second-set tiebreaker to defeat Pomeroy, 6-1, 7-6(5).
By late Friday night, junior Chris Mitchell (Ann Arbor, Mich.) was still looking to close out his first round match with Lipscomb's Dustin Overbeck.
Saturday's schedule includes first round doubles matches and the completion of the remaining singles contests. Formanczyk and Mitchell will team up and have received a bye into the round of 64.
