Spartans Bow Out At ITA Regional Men's Tennis Championships

MADISON, Wis. - After three days of upsets at the Omni Hotels ITA Region IV Championships, Michigan State could not survive the weekend as the Spartans fell in both singles and doubles Sunday (Oct. 27).
Sophomore Andrew Formanczyk (Rochester Hills, Mich.), coming off a three-set upset over Illinois's Chris Martin in the second round, went up against another Big Ten powerhouse in Ohio State's Jeremy Wurtzman, ranked No. 21 in the nation. Once again, Formanczyk lost the first set but regained composure to win the second. Unfortunately, his run would come to halt as Wurtzman escaped into the quarterfinals, defeating Formanczyk, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5.
In doubles, junior Eric Simonton (Annandale, N.J.) and sophomore Cameron Marshall (Louisville, Ky.) would face Wurtzman and his partner Brenton Contini in the second round. But the Buckeyes would come out victorious again, eliminating the Spartans, 8-5. Also falling in the second round, Formanczyk and teammate junior Chris Mitchell (Ann Arbor, Mich.) dropped an 8-6 decision to Northwestern's Josh Axler and Adam Schaechterle.
MSU will return home in preparation for the Toledo Invitational, which begins Friday (Nov. 1) and will conclude Sunday (Nov. 3).
