EAST LANSING, Mich. - After scoring just one goal on ten shots in the first half, the Michigan State women's soccer team came out determined to convert more scoring opportunities into goals in the second half, which is exactly what it did as MSU scored three second half goals Sunday (Oct. 20) afternoon en route to a 4-0 win over Detroit. MSU is now 11-4-1 overall while Detroit falls to 4-7-4.
"We moved the ball well offensively in the first half, but missed some opportunities to finish with a goal," said MSU head coach Tom Saxton. " In the second half we did a much better job of taking advantage of opportunites. I'm happy to put this game in the books as a win and move on."
Heidi Lutz (Sr., San Ramon, Calif.) got MSU on the board early in the first half, firing a shot past UDM goalkeeper Allison Dube. Emily Carbott (So., Northville) and Emma Harris (Fr., Portage) each assisted on the goal. Despite keeping constant pressure on the Titans, MSU was unable to score again before halftime.
The tide turned in the second half, however, as the Spartans regained their scoring touch. Nice passing between Tiffany Laskowski (Jr., Troy) and Michelle Perun (Jr., Rochester) set up Abby Shepherd (So., Milford) just inside the box for a 2-0 Spartan lead. Just over 12 minutes later, Perun this time was on the receiving end of a pass from Amy Allen (Sr., Grand Blanc), as she scored to make it 3-0. Dana Voorheis (Fr., Saginaw) scored her first career goal for the Green and White at the 72:00 mark to ensure a 4-0 MSU victory.
Spartan goalkeeper Stacy Heller (Jr., Madison, Wis.) was sharp in net when called upon, making two key saves in the first half to keep State in front. She finished the game with four saves and earned her sixth shutout of the year. She now has 14.5 for her career.
MSU will recognize its five seniors in its regular-season finale prior to Friday's game with Michigan at 3:00 p.m. at Old College Field.
