EAST LANSING, Mich. - After Michelle Perun (Jr., Rochester) scored to put the Michigan State women's soccer team ahead with just under 15 minutes to play, it looked as though MSU may upset No. 21 Michigan. However, U-M's Therese Heaton scored in the 87th minute to tie the game. Two overtimes and twenty minutes later, the game ended in a 1-1 tie, Friday (Oct. 25) afternoon at Old College Field. It was the second tie in a week for MSU, which is now 11-4-2 overall and 5-3-2 in the Big Ten. Michigan is now 12-4-1 and 7-2-1 in conference play.
"We left it all on the field today," remarked MSU head coach Tom Saxton. "I am very proud of our effort. We had some better chances down the stretch and sometimes you just don't get the bounces."
Neither team managed to get on the board in the first half, but the Wolverines supplied most of the offensive action, out shooting MSU, 10-1.
In the second half, the two teams battled back and forth, this time MSU held a 10-6 shot advantage in the half. MSU's Perun broke the scoreless-deadlock at the 75:15 mark after taking a pass from Emily Carbott (So., Northville) and then slipping the ball just inside the far post, past U-M goalkeeper Suzie Grech.
It looked as though Perun's goal would hold up for State until the 87th minute when a header inside the six-yard box by Heaton beat Spartan goalkeeper Stacy Heller (Jr., Madison, Wis.) to tie the game.
Scoring opportunities proved hard to come by in overtime, but Michigan out shot MSU, 5-3, in the two combined sessions.
Heller finished with 11 saves on the day for MSU.
State returns to action Wednesday (Oct. 30) when it travels to Mt. Pleasant for a 3:00 p.m. match with Central Michigan.
