EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's soccer team wasted little time in taking care of Loyola Chicago, Wednesday (Oct. 2) afternoon, as Brett Konley (Sr., Plymouth) scored the first of four MSU goals just 1:12 into the game, as the Spartan men's soccer team defeated Loyola Chicago, 4-0 at Old College Field. The win improves the Spartans' record to 7-2, while Loyola drops to 3-8.
"I'm very proud to be a part of this team today," said MSU head coach Joe Baum. "We played with a great deal of focus. In past years, we might have looked past Loyola and ended up with a tie game. To score in the first two minutes provided a great lift for everyone. And scoring twice more late in the first half was also key, especially the third goal. It's tough to come back from a 3-0 halftime deficit, so that was a big goal."
After Konley's header in the second minute, the two teams traded offensive opportunities until the 30:01 mark when Thomas Trivelloni (Jr., Mt. Clemens) made it 2-0. Nick DeGraw (Jr., Clinton Twp.) and Kevin Wittig (Jr., Newton, Pa.) each drew assists as DeGraw headed Wittig's corner kick to Trivelloni who headed the ball past the goalkeeper. Triveloni scored his second goal of the game just over 10 minutes later when he put in a rebound off a Craig Hearn (Jr., Farmington Hills) shot to give the Spartans a 3-0 lead at halftime.
Loyola pressured the Spartans early in the second half, outshooting MSU 8-7, but were unable to solve Spartan goalkeepers Tyler Robinson (Sr., Lansing), who made three saves before being replaced with just over 25 minutes to go, or Mike Robinson (Jr., Troy) who made two saves.
After being taken down in the box, Jordan Gruber (So., Beverly Hills) converted on a penalty kick at 81:23 to make the final score 4-0.
"From here it gets tough, because we have our next six games on the road," said Baum. " But, if we come out and play like we did today, we will give ourselves a chance to win a lot of games."
The Spartans travel to Ohio State this weekend to take on the Buckeyes, Sunday (Oct. 6), at 2 p.m.
