EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's soccer team fell to No. 20 Notre Dame, 2-0, Wednesday (Oct. 16) night in South Bend, Ind. The loss dropped the Spartans to 7-5 overall, while the Irish improved to 7-3-3. The game marked the two schools' first meeting since September 1993, a game the Irish also won.
Notre Dame controlled the game offensively from the outset as they outshot the Spartans 9-2 in the first half. MSU goalkeeper Tyler Robinson (Sr., Lansing) made four key saves in the half to keep the game scoreless until the 44th minute when Notre Dame's Chad Riley scored on a header to give the Irish a 1-0 lead just before halftime. MSU's Jordan Gruber (So., Beverly Hills) nearly tied the game with :18 left in the half, but just missed the net on a shot from inside the box.
The Irish were relentless offensively in the second half, outshooting the Spartans 18-1 in the half. Devon Prescod provided an insurance goal for Notre Dame at the 64:40 mark, scoring off a header.
Despite the loss, Robinson continued his impressive year in goal for Michigan State, making 11 saves, just two shy of his season high.
MSU returns to Big Ten play when it travels to Penn State, Sunday (Oct. 20) for a 2:00 p.m. game with the Nittany Lions.
