ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Two second-half goals, which came less than three minutes apart, helped the Michigan State soccer team defeat Michigan, 2-1, Sunday afternoon in Ann Arbor. The win improved the Spartans' record to 8-4 overall and pushed them to the .500 mark in the league at 2-2. Michigan is now 4-6-1 and winless in Big Ten play at 0-3.
The two teams played a physical, evenly matched first half, as both the Spartans and Wolverines recorded six shots. MSU grabbed the lead at the 66:36 mark when Brett Konley (Sr., Plymouth) took a pass from Jordan Gruber (So., Beverly Hills) and chipped it over the head of Wolverine goalkeeper Joe Zawacki. Less than three minutes later, Jeffrey Krass (Jr., Brighton) beat Zawacki with a header off a cross from John Kaczmarek (Fr., Plymouth) to make the score 2-0.
Michigan cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 82nd minute but Spartan goalkeeper Tyler Robinson (Sr., Lansing) hung tough in goal, denying the Wolverines on any attempt to tie the game. Robinson finished with seven saves. MSU outshot U-M by a count of 14-12.
The Spartans will travel to South Bend, Ind., on Wednesday to take on Notre Dame at 8:00 p.m., before returning to league play next weekend at Penn State.
