Men's Tennis Gets Taste Of Big Ten Competition

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - While junior Chris Mitchell (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and sophomore Andrew Formanczyk (Rochester Hills, Mich.) participated in the ITA All-American tournament a week ago, the rest of the Spartans ventured into Minneapolis for the Minnesota Invitational which got underway late Thursday night, Oct. 10.
Michigan State battled host Minnesota in the hidden-dual match tournament after it flew into the Twin Cities Thursday. Juniors Mike Jonckheere (London, Ont.) and Josh Efros (West Bloomfield, Mich.) got on the board early with singles wins. Jonckheere defeated Steve Solberg, 6-4, 6-3, while Efros escaped with a 6-4, 3-6 (10-6) win over Nate Feldman. In doubles, sophomore Anthony Stefani (Grosse Pointe Shores, Mich.) teamed up with freshman Mike Brown (Portage, Mich.) for their fourth win together this season, topping Feldman and Michael Kantar, 8-3.
The Spartans opened Friday morning with a new lineup against Wisconsin. Junior Eric Simonton (Annandale, N.J.), who sat out last fall due to elbow surgery, recorded a singles win over Mark Weinig, 6-4, 6-2, and a doubles victory with sophomore Cameron Marshall (Louisville, Ky.) over Jeremiah Fuller and Ward Bortz, 8-2.
The afternoon session pitted MSU against regional-foe Marquette in singles matches. State topped the Golden Eagles in four of the six contests as Hourani, Simonton, Marshall and Stefani only gave up a combined 12 games en route to victories.
MSU is scheduled to take on Boston College and Nebraska Saturday, Oct. 12. It will wrap up its trip with another battle with Minnesota Sunday at 10:30 a.m. central time.
