Spartan Swimming Wraps Up Action At Rainbow Invitational

HONOLULU - The Michigan State men's and women's swimming teams completed action at the two-day Rainbow Invitational hosted by the University of Hawaii Saturday, Jan. 5. The meet was not scored, but times made counted toward NCAA qualifying times.
The women turned in many solid performances in the second day of the invitational. Katie Duncombe (Jr., Erie, Pa.) led the women by placing first in the 200-yard backstroke (2:06.39) and 200 freestyle (1:55.54) and second in the 200-yard IM (2:08.84). Duncombe finished the invitational with five first-place finishes. Ildiko Szekely (Sr., Budapest, Hungary) placed first in the 200-yard butterfly (2:06.39) and second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:56.07). Other Spartans with first-place finishes included Jen Windstein (Fr., Lancaster, Pa.) in the mixed 1000-yard freestyle (10:14.24), Ashby Baldock (Sr., Tallahassee, Fla.) in the 100-yard freestyle (54.09) and Deb O'Neil (Jr., Chalfont, Pa.) in the 500-yard freestyle (5:01.16).
For the men, Joe Brennan (Jr., Poway, Calif.) took second in the 1000-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 9:34.90. Aaron Mahaney (Sr., Easton, Pa.) and Aaron Benore (Sr., Grand Blanc) placed fifth in the 200-yard butterfly and 200-yard backstroke, respectively.
The men start the Big Ten season Friday, Jan. 11 with a meet at Northwestern at 6 p.m. The women open their Big Ten season Saturday, Jan. 12 at Purdue beginning at 2 p.m.
