Spartan Swimming Completes Day One Action At Rainbow Invitational

HONOLULU - The Michigan State men's and women's swimming and diving teams completed day one action at the 26th annual Rainbow Invitational hosted by the University of Hawaii Friday, Jan. 4. The meet was not scored, but times made counted toward NCAA qualifying times.
Katie Duncombe (Jr., Erie, Pa.) paced the women with first place finishes in the 100-yard backstroke (56.54), 100-yard IM (58.86) and 50-yard backstroke (26.28). Deb O'Neil (Jr., Chalfont, Pa.) also performed well for the Spartans with a third-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke (1:07.08) and a fourth-place finish in 50-yard backstroke (31.15). Ildiko Szekely (Sr., Budapest, Hungary) took third in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.04.
For the men, Joe Brennan (Jr., Poway, Calif.) placed first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:41.06. Joel Hageman (So., Ft. Wayne, Ind.) swam at 23.48 for a fourth-place finish in the 50-yard butterfly.
In the relays, the women took third in the 200-yard medley (1:48.68) while the men took fourth (1:37.39).
Both the men and women return to action for day two of the invitational Saturday night (Jan. 5) in Honolulu.
