ANOTHER LONG DAY Michigan State will play host to a Saturday doubleheader for the second straight week. The Spartans shutout both UW-Green Bay and Wright State to open the season with a 2-0 record.
ABOVE AVERAGE Four players met or passed the .500 mark for singles wins for the season last week while two others continued to improve their record. Junior Jimmy McGuire (5-5) and sophomores Mike Jonckheere (6-5), Chris Mitchell (7-7) and Eric Simonton (1-0) didn't lose a singles point and freshmen Andrew Formanczyk (13-6) and Cameron Marshall (10-6) reached double-digit victories. MSU also surpassed the .500 mark as a team, holding a 60-56 overall record in singles.
DOUBLE YOUR PLEASURE The tandem of Mitchell and Formanczyk won both doubles matches over the weekend, one at number one and the other at number two. After going 0-3 in the fall, their record now stands at 2-3.
COMING BACK Junior Goran Topalo sat out with a minor back injury during the Spartans' triumphs over UWGB and WSU. He said he will be ready for action against Toledo and Dayton on Saturday.
LAST MEETING WITH TOLEDO Michigan State defeated Toledo at home, 7-0, January 20, 2001. Topalo defeated UT's Dipesh Rio, 6-3, 7-6(3), at number one singles.
LAST MEETING WITH DAYTON MSU also shut out Dayton in their trip to East Lansing, January 22, 2000. Juniors Todd Townsend and Topalo each picked up a two-set singles victory.
