Spartans Complete Tom Fallon Invitational With 17 Singles Victories

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Michigan State men's tennis team finished its second invitational of the season Sunday at the Tom Fallon Invitational on the campus of Notre Dame. The Spartans totaled a 17-22 singles record and finished 3-7 in doubles.
Freshman Cameron Marshall (Prospect, Ky.) and the doubles combination of juniors Goran Topalo (Prague, Czech. Rep.) and Adam Hourani (Lansing, Mich.) guided the Spartans throughout the whole tournament coming away with a total of four and two victories, respectively.
Sunday's action had Michigan State facing Purdue in singles and Ball State in doubles. Even though team records do not count for the tournament, MSU won four of seven singles matches from Purdue. Marshall won at the No. 2 position, beating Carl McCafferty 7-6, 6-1. Topalo and freshman Andrew Formanczyk (Rochester Hills, Mich.) also recorded two-set singles victories, while sophomore Chris Mitchell (Ann Arbor, Mich.) needed three sets to defeat Troy Havens, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-8).
The final three matches of the tournament were doubles against Ball State. Hourani and Topalo teamed up once again and came away with an 8-4 victory. They finished with a 2-1 record overall. Marshall and Mitchell defeated Burnett and Rhodes 8-5, but junior Jimmy McGuire (Columbus, Ohio) and sophomore Mike Jonckheere (London, Ont.) were not so lucky, losing 8-2 to Pressel and Varga.
The ITA Regional competition will be next for the Spartans as 28 teams will be coming to East Lansing starting Friday, October 26 and will run until Monday, October 29.
