Men's Tennis Completes Opening Day of Tom Fallon Invitational

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Michigan State men's tennis team completed its opening day of competition at the Tom Fallon Invitational on the campus of Notre Dame University. The Spartans competed in singles and doubles matches primarily against Indiana State and William & Mary, but also had two singles matches against Butler and one against Ball State, and one doubles match against Butler.
Sophomore Mike Hodge (Grand Rapids, Mich.) won both of his singles contests, winning matches that were decided by third set tiebreakers. Hodge beat Butler's Jimmy Borendame, 5-7, 6-3, (10-7), and William & Mary's Jeffrey Kader, 2-6, 6-3, (10-5).
Against William & Mary, MSU had a straigh set win by freshman Andrew Formanczyk (Rochester Hills, Mich.), who won 6-4, 6-2, while sophomore Mike Jonckheere (London, Ont.) won in three sets, 6-3, 1-6, (10-4).
The Spartans' only other singles win against nationally-ranked Indiana State came from junior Adam Hourani (Lansing, Mich.), who defeated Dalibor Mihajlovic, 7-6, 6-3.
In doubles, Hourami teamed with junior Goran Topalo (Prague, Czech Rep.) to defeat Indiana State's Mihajlovic and O'Connell, 9-8.
Michigan State will continue play Saturday with singles matches against Ball State and Wisconsin, and doubles against William & Mary.
