Spartans Open Tennis Season At Ball State Invite

MUNCIE, Ind. - The men's tennis team got their season off and running at the Ball State Invitational Friday with three singles and doubles draws as well as consolation brackets on the first day of competition.
Sophomore Mike Jonckheere (London, Ont.) won both of his singles matches in the C division, defeating Mike Weaver 6-0, 6-3 and Ryan Schnack 6-4, 6-3. Jonckheere's next match is in the quarterfinals at 9:30 AM on Saturday. Also in the C division freshman Anthony Stefani (Grosse Point Shores, Mich.) got his first taste of college tennis, but lost his first round match 6-4, 6-1. He also fell in the consolation round 6-3, 6-3.
In the singles A division, sophomore Chris Mitchell (Ann Arbor, Mich.) defeated Brandon Currie 1-6, 6-2, 6-3, but lost in the second round in a tough two-setter 7-6 (11), 6-1. Junior Goran Topalo (Prague, Czech Rep.) played two hard-fought matches, but came up just short in both of them, losing 6-3, 7-6 (7) in the first round and 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in the consolation bracket. Freshman Andrew Formanczyk (Rochester Hills, Mich.) also fell in his first round match but stayed alive when his opponent withdrew from injury. His quarterfinal consolation match begins at 10:30 AM Saturday morning.
Sophomore Mike Hodge (Grand Rapids, Mich.) came up short in the B division by losing to Justin Kates 6-3, 6-1. Hodge then faced Tony Tran in a difficult three set match, but fell just short, losing 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. Two other Spartans competed in this division. Junior Adam Hourani (Lansing, Mich.) and freshman Cameron Marshall (Prospect, Ky.) fell in their first matches Friday morning, but came back to win in the consolation round. They both play at 11:00 AM Saturday and if they advance again, they will have to face each other in the semifinals.
In doubles action, Marshall-Stefani received a bye in the C division and will play a quarterfinal match at 8:30 AM Saturday. Formanczyk-Mitchell and Jonckheere-Topalo lost in the A division while Hodge-Hourani fell 9-8 in the B division. All three teams play consolation matches also at 8:30 AM.
The tournament continues with more competition on Saturday and concludes on Sunday.
