MUNCIE, Ind. - For only their second day of collegiate tennis, freshmen Cameron Marshall and Anthony Stefani aren't showing signs of butterflies. Marshall and Stefani teamed up to advance to the finals of the doubles C division at the 2001 Ball State Invitational Saturday.
Earning a bye in the first round on Friday, Marshall-Stefani won 8-1 in the quarterfinals and 8-3 in the semifinals. They are the only Michigan State representatives left in the main draw in either singles or doubles. They will play their finals match at 8:30 AM Sunday morning.
Marshall wasn't only dominating in doubles, but won both matches in the consolation singles B division. Defeating Alex Kurz 6-1, 6-3 in the quarters, Marshall had to go up against teammate junior Adam Hourani in the semifinals. Hourani advanced to the semis after cruising past Kai Blache 6-2, 6-1. After dropping the first set 7-5, Hourani fought back to win the second 6-3, but ultimately fell to Marshall in the third 6-2. Marshall will play his finals match at 9:30 AM Sunday.
Although Hourani lost a dramatic match in singles, he combined with Mike Hodge to move through to the finals of the consolation doubles B division. They advanced to the semifinals after their opponent withdrew with injuries in the first round and then a received a bye in the second round. Winning 8-5 in the semis, Hourani-Hodge will take the court at 8:30 AM Sunday for their final match.
In other action, sophomore Mike Jonckheere, who was the only singles player left in the main draw after Friday, lost in the quarterfinals 6-3, 7-6 (0). Freshman Andrew Formanczyk suffered a tough singles defeat in the quarters of the consolation A division 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. Over on the doubles side, Formanczyk teamed with sophomore Chris Mitchell and Jonckheere combined with junior Goran Topalo in the consolation A division, but both fell in the first round.
All finals matches, both in the main draw and the consolation bracket, will get underway at either 8:30 or 9:30 AM.
