EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team saw their season come to a close Thursday (Apr. 26) with a loss to Penn State in the first round of the Big Ten Championships. The Spartans finished the season 6-16 overall and 0-11 in the Big Ten.
The Spartans did show improvement during the 2000-2001 season. They tripled their win total from the previous year. In the 1999-2000 season they had only two wins, compared to six this season.
MSU had several individual victories. Three Spartans won their first Big Ten singles matches this season. The group includes freshman Trine Lise Juliussen (Oslo, Norway), freshman Caroline Lay (Brisbane, Australia) and sophomore Mollie Hood (Bellaire, Mich.) - giving MSU great hopes for upcoming seasons.
MSU doubles teams also had solid seasons. Three doubles teams had Big Ten wins. The duo of Juliussen and Lay had two Big Ten wins as well as a 10-12 overall record - the best on the squad. Senior Natasha Skogerboe (Coon Rapids, Minn.) and Hood also combined for two Big Ten wins this season. Freshman Josie Schmude (Traverse City, Mich.) and Skogerboe added one Big Ten win as well.
Although still rebuilding, the improvements this MSU team has made in only one year under head coach Tim Bauer offer promise for the upcoming season. For Michigan State women's tennis the best is yet to come.
