EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team lost to the Purdue Boilermakers, 6-1, on Saturday, April 21 at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. The match had to be moved inside due to rain.
Freshman Mike Hodge (Grand Rapids, Mich.) won the solo point for the Spartans. Hodge defeated Purdue's Laith Al-Agba, 6-4 in the first set. Hodge then dropped the second set 1-6. In the third set, Hodge jumped out to a 3-0 lead only to drop the next three points to tie the set at 3 a piece. The two then traded serves until Hodge finally broke Al-Agba to win the set and the match, 7-5.
Sophomore Goran Topalo (Prague, Czech Rep.) won the first set of his match but then dropped the next two to Purdue's Scott Mayer to lose the match, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. The pair of Topalo and freshman Mike Jonckheere (London, Ont.) were defeated by 20th-ranked Jason Marshall and Dan Swan, 8-3 at No. 1 doubles.
"Purdue played well and they are a good team," said MSU head coach Gene Orlando. "We just keep looking to get better and find ways to win."
The Spartans (7-15, 1-7 Big Ten) will play Indiana tomorrow (April 22) at noon at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts. In the event of inclement weather, the match will be moved indoors to the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
