EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team lost to the Michigan Wolverines, 6-1, on Wednesday, April 11, at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
After three shirts, three sets, and almost three hours freshman Eric Simonton (Annandale, N.J.) defeated Michigan's Henry Beam at No. 1 singles. Simonton and Beam exchanged serves all the way through the match. Simonton lost in the first set in a tiebreaker, 6-7(1). With all the other matches completed, Simonton defeated Beam in the second set, 7-5. In the third set, the players alternated serves until Beam broke Simonton to take the lead at 5-4. Simonton did not let that get him down as he went on to break Beam, hold serve and break Beam again to win the set and the match 7-5.
"Michigan simply outplayed us today," said MSU head coach Gene Orlando. "It was great to see Eric Simonton beat a great player. Michigan's Henry Beam is ranked 83rd in the nation and 4th in the region."
The Spartans (7-14, 1-6 Big Ten) head to Iowa City, Iowa, to try to get back on the winning streak on Saturday, April 14 at noon.
"Iowa is a team that plays at our level," Orlando said. "We have a good chance of winning."
