MSU Men's Tennis Upsets No. 44 Louisiana-Lafayette

In the singles competition all but one match went into three sets. Finally, the Spartans took the last three points needed to win by winning at the No. 1, 2, and 3 singles positions. Topalo defeated Jason Pieters 7-6(6), 2-6, 6-4 at the No. 1 singles position, while Simonton defeated Jakub Ilowski (7-6(6), 7-6(4)) at the No. 2 position and Mitchell defeated Tomi Winnig (6-2, 3-6, 6-3).
"It was nice to get a win over a ranked opponent on our home surface in front of such a big crowd," said head coach Gene Orlando. "It was also great to get this win on the day we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the first Michigan State Big Ten Championship."
The 1951 Michigan State men's tennis team was honored today during the changeover between the doubles and singles matches. The team will be recognized during half time of the Michigan State men's basketball game vs. Purdue tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 4.
The Spartans will be home next weekend, on Saturday, Feb. 10th as they face Western Illinois and Xavier. Both matches will be held at the Indoor Tennis Facility on the corner of Mt. Hope and Harrison Rd. The Spartans will face Western Illinois at 12:00 p.m. and Xavier at 6:00 p.m.
