EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team lost to Minnesota (6-1) on Feb. 23 at the Indoor Tennis Facility
Freshman Chris Mitchell (Ann Arbor, Mich.) defeated Alexi Zharinov 6-4, 6-4, to score the Spartans lone point at No. 3 singles.
Mitchell paired with freshman Eric Simonton (Annandale, N.J.) and captured the lone doubles match win defeating Eric Robertson and Karl Sloss, 8-4, at No. 3 doubles.
The Spartans faced some tough competition against No. 32 Minnesota but they remained competitive. "We continue to be competitive and remain close but our youth and inexperience comes through," said head coach Gene Orlando. "We will continue competing and working hard. Our last three matches have been against good teams. We hope this experience early will help us in the second half of the season."
The Spartans (5-4, 0-2 Big Ten) return to action on Sunday, Feb. 25 at Western Michigan at 11:00 a.m. and against Valparaiso at 5:00 p.m. also at WMU.
"The Western Michigan match will be a big match. They are a good team and they beat us last year so we are looking to get revenge," said Orlando.
