EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team (4-4 overall) lost to Ball State Friday 6-1.
In the singles competition, the Spartans were close, taking three matches to three sets. Freshman Trine Lise Juliussen (Oslo, Norway) was the only Spartan to take a win, however, defeating Darcy Poulos (BS) 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (15) in the No. 4 position. At the No. 3 position freshman Josie Schmude (Traverse City, Mich.) went three sets, losing 6-4, 1-6, 0-6 to Melissa Roach (BS) and at No. 5 junior Christee Chargot (Port Huron, Mich.) also went three sets losing 5-7, 6-2, 4-6 to BSU's Shareen Korving.
In doubles action, Ball State swept all three sets to take the team point.
"We played a tough team today. They played well," said head coach Tim Bauer. "Our attitude was good. We played tough and the team is developing, we were just out-matched today. I am pleased with where we are going."
The Spartans begin Big Ten competition next weekend (Feb. 24 and 25) against Northwestern (Sat. at 11 a.m.) and Illinois (Sun. at 10 a.m.) at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
