DETROIT (AP) - Michigan State lost its 11th game in a row to North Dakota as the Fighting Sioux got a goal 7:09 into overtime from freshman Brandon Bochenski to give them a 5-4 victory over the Spartans and the Great Lakes Invitational championship Saturday night at Joe Louis Arena.
North Dakota, which last lost to MSU on Nov. 24, 1979, is the first team besides Michigan State or Michigan to win the GLI since 1987 when Wisconsin won the tournament.
Michigan State had won the tournament the previous four years.
Bochenski slammed a one-timer past Spartan junior goaltender Ryan Miller from just outside the crease.
Michigan State rallied from a 4-2 third-period deficit to force overtime.
Spartan junior defenseman John Michael Liles scored his second goal of the game with 7:51 left in the third period to pull MSU to within 4-3. His wrist shot from the slot beat North Dakota freshman goaltender Josh Siembida high on the glove side.
It was Siembida's first college game.
MSU junior defenseman Brad Fast tied the game with 1:36 left in regulation time when his wrist shot from the inside edge of the left circle squirted through Siembida's pads.
The Spartans outshot the Fighting Sioux 16-2 in the third period.
North Dakota (9-9-1) jumped on Miller and the Spartans (13-4-2) for four goals in the first period and took a 4-1 lead into the second period.
Freshman James Massen opened the scoring 6:51 into the game with the first goal of his collegiate career. He put a low shot through Miller's pads from the bottom of the left circle.
Michigan State tied it with a power-play goal just 1:02 later when freshman Brock Radunske put a one-timer from the bottom of the right circle past Fighting Sioux freshman goaltender Josh Siembida, who played the first game of his collegiate career. Junior Tim Skarperud gave North Dakota a 2-1 lead at 10:16 when he put in a rebound while lying on the ice.
Skarperud also had two assists in the game and had five points in two tournament games.
Sophomore Ryan Hale made it 3-1 when he tipped a cross-ice pass past Miller at 12:09 and senior defenseman Aaron Schneekloth scored a five-on-three power-play goal with a one-time slap shot from the top of the right circle with 1:30 left in the period.
It's the first time that Miller, last season's Hoby Baker Memorial Award winner as college hockey's best player, has ever given up four goals in a period.
Michigan State closed the gap to 4-2 with a power-play goal 4:23 into the second period when Liles' slap shot from the top of the left circle deflected in off a North Dakota player.
North Dakota defeated Michigan 5-4 in overtime in Friday's first semifinal while Michigan State defeated Michigan Tech 4-1 on Friday.
Michigan defeated Michigan Tech 7-4 in the consolation game earlier on Saturday.
