OXFORD, Ohio - The Michigan State women's swimming and diving team took first place in the 19-team Miami Invitational Sunday night (Dec. 2), while the men's team finished second. The women captured the title of the three-day invitational with 1,406.50 points, 30.5 points ahead of second-place Miami (OH).
Ildiko Szekely (Sr., Budapest, Hungary) took first place in the 200-yard butterfly to pace the women. In the 200-yard backstroke, Kate Duncombe (Jr., Erie, Pa.) placed second with a time of 2:01.65, while Ashby Baldock (Sr., Tallahassee, Fla.) finished fourth at 2:05.29. Also finishing in the top five for the women were Jen Windstein (Fr., Lancaster, Pa.) and Deb O'Neil (Jr., Chalfont, Pa.), who took third and fourth place, respectively, in the 1,650 freestyle.
For the men, Joe Baicy (Jr., Cary, N.C.) had the top performance of the day by taking second in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:04.99. Scott Shafer (Sr., Centerville, Va.) also collected points for the Spartans, finishing fourth in the 100-yard freestyle at 45.70.
"Overall, I thought we did a real nice job," said MSU head coach Jim Lutz. "I'm real pleased with everyone. The meet gave us a chance to compete at a real high level. We had a real good morning, but we were a little tired at the end. In the end, however, we came through with some real nice times."
The Miami Invitational was the last meet of the fall for the Spartans. MSU's next meet will be the Rainbow Invitational in Hawaii on Jan. 2-3.
