OXFORD, OHIO - The Spartans stayed in contention for both the men and women's swimming championships at the Miami Invitational in Oxford, Ohio, Saturday, Dec. 1. Heading into Sunday, the women stand in first place with a four and a half point lead over host Miami while the men trail Kenyon by 51 points.
The women's swimming squad received first place in two events. Senior Ildiko Szekely (Budapest, Hungary) set a pool and school record in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 55.50 seconds. Junior Kathryn Duncombe (Erie, Pa.) won the 100-yard backstroke (55.88) earning 36 points for State and also set a NCAA provisional time (55.85). The 200-yard medley relay team of Duncombe, junior Debra O'Neil (Chalfont, Pa.) and freshmen Jana Richardson (Ventura, Calif.) and Jennifer Windstein (Lancaster, Pa.) finished in second only .37 seconds behind Western Kentucky.
On the diving board, senior Carly Weiden (Kentwood, Mich.) picked up first place while junior Stephanie Anisko (Mississauga, Ont.) took second in the 3-meter dive.
Hoping to pick up ground on Kenyon, the men stayed in second going into the final day in Miami. The 800-yard freestyle relay team of senior Scott Shaffer (Centerville, Va.), junior Joe Brennan (Poway, Calif.), and freshmen Joseph Obringer (Glenview, Ill.) and Peter Politi (Newburgh, N.Y.) took third while junior Nick Visscher (Holland, Mich.) helped the Spartans by also picking up third place in the 3-meter dive.
"We continued to swim well tonight," said MSU head coach Jim Lutz. "It was a long day, but we have some momentum heading into the last day of competition. I'm pleased with where we're at right now and we are well ahead of our pace from last year."
The Spartans will wrap up the Miami Invitational Sunday, Dec. 3 with final events beginning at 6 p.m.
