EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's basketball team opened exhibition play with a 93-74 win over the Premier All-Stars on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 4) at the Breslin Center. MSU received balanced scoring from its line up as six players scored in double figures, including four starters.
"We were really excited to have the team get out and play a game," said second-year head coach Joanne P. McCallie. "It was a solid team effort and we had a lot of different people step up. We played hard and we were very aggressive on the offensive zone. I thought we played a good half-court game and an up-tempo offense."
MSU was led by junior college transfer Syreeta Bromfield, who canned 19 points in 22 minutes. Junior guard Vnemina Reese added 14 points and six assists, while freshman guard Cortne Ellis finished with 13 points. Freshman guard Kristin Haynie (12 points), freshman center Kelli Roehrig (12 points) and freshman forward Joy Johnson (10 points) rounded out the Spartans in double figures. Haynie also dished out a game-high 11 assists and had six steals, while Johnson pulled down a team-best 12 boards.
MSU shot 50.7 percent (38-of-75) from the field for the game, including 53.8 percent (21-of-39) in the second half. The Spartans also connected on 8-of-18 attempts (44.4 percent) from the three-point line and 9-of-11 attempts (81.8 percent) from the charity stripe.
The Premier All-Stars were led by Lisa Cline with a game-high 20 points.
MSU returns to action next Sunday (Nov. 11) with a 2 p.m. contest against the Basketball Traveler's Foreign Team at the Breslin Center.
